Designer Melanie Falvey
Melanie Falvey is a jeweler and interior lifestyle designer she creates beautiful surroundings all around the world. She believes in the power of beauty as a means to achieving a healthier and happier home and workspace. She approaches every project from a holistic point of view, taking into account not only the aesthetics but also the emotional aspects of a space and its inhabitants.
Her signature style could be described as relaxed luxury, the marriage of high-quality natural materials with a stylish comfort.
WHAT MOTIVATED & INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
Well I was designing weddings and interiors (I still do) and I used to make jewellery to relax and de stress in between projects. And then one day, I thought, hey, why don´t I do this properly? Set up a business and start selling my designs?
That´s how it all started and it´s proven to be a great combination, I wouldn´t want to give up any of my creative businesses.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS
I am a jewellery designer and I also handcraft most of my designs. I believe jewellery has the power to connect us to past, present and future and I love how it is infused of life´s special moments.
In many happy moments in a person´s life, there is a piece of jewellery that will remind them of those feelings and emotions.
I just love how it is another vehicle to create and feel happiness.
My mission is to fill a person´s life with happy moments, whether it is through creating beautiful surroundings for them or a special piece of jewellery.
WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CAREER AS A PASSION?
Most of my memories even when I was really young involve making jewellery or decorating parties or rooms in the house, so I definitely know my career is my passion-how lucky is that!
What part of being a designer do you prefer? The Creative, Sales, social or marketing side?
I really enjoy designing, and to be honest, I would say Social media and marketing are really fun too once you know what you are doing! Tech was a bit of a challenge at first but now it´s (almost) a breeze!
WHAT IDEAS DID YOU USE TO GET YOUR BUSINESS UP AND RUNNING?
I just did it! I always take immediate action on my ideas, I cannot help doing so. I get so excited about them, I couldn´t imagine waiting for them to materialise…I need to get them started.
I obviously don´t put out every crazy idea I have…I sit on them or sleep on them, ha ha ha but if the excitement doesn'tfade, I take action!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY of building your tribe for YOUR BUSINESS AND GETTING NEW CUSTOMERS?
I would say social media and holding pop up events because , although differently, they allow you to make connections, get to know them and establish relationships.
Who do you follow?
I would say…everybody who has talent! I admire so many designers it would be hard to name just a few.
Obviously the master jewellers are a huge inspiration : Cartier, Bvlgari, Boucheron…but I love many contemporary jewellers too.
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES SO FAR?
Probably sales are always tricky because you need to be your own judge and put your designs out there and you always feel a bit vulnerable. You do get more confident though as time goes by and when you see the response in the customers.
HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES?
I still try to overcome them day by day. I think as creatives and business owners we are always learning, growing, trying new things. I would say not a single day goes by that I don´t learn something new about the business, the craft or even myself.
But I love that ever “keep learning” attitude, so it´s not a burden whatsoever.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE the best ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I get to create what I envision, literally in many aspects. I create designs, I create my schedule, I create my lifestyle…it´s a whole lot of freedom (even though you need to be responsible about it, obviously).
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER creative ENTREPRENEURS?
Definitely get yourself some business education.
HOW DO YOU KEEP MOTIVATED when you are having a bad day?
Well, that´s exactly what I do in my other business, I create workspaces that maintain your motivation high and that enable you to perform at your best and highest potential. So, in my case, my workspace/studio is the perfect container for my creativity and productivity and I have triggers and resources in place to avoid bad days. I only have bad minutes, once I use my own tools, the day rolls again.
I believe having a supportive environment, especially for entrepreneurs is vital.
What are you main inspirations?
Almost everything I see is an inspiration.
But I would say my collections are inspired in archaeology, history,nature, celebrations, mood and empowerment.
What platforms do you use to sell you products on?
Right now I am re branding so I am setting up my own e-commerce. I was selling on other e-commerce platforms but I want to grow my BTC to be able to offer them a complete shopping experience. I feel that if I have control of the whole process, I can really cater for them.
Do you have any marketing tips to share with our members?
Create a solid brand and be cohesive. You can always switch things up later on or do a complete re brand but while you are at each stage, make sure it is solid and consistent.

Publicity is a blessing to any business regardless of the platform. Efficient, cost effective and great longevity are only some of the benefits of publicity. Also, as public standing rises and more people become aware of the services a business can offer, sales will naturally increase. Consumers response to genuine coverage of a business is more positive than that of advertisements. Rather than feeling overwhelmed and unsure with the quality of service, (good) publicity ensures that consumers feel as though they can depend on said business; an article or media coverage holds a stronger and more respected presence amongst users. However, generating publicity for your business can be extremely difficult. In a world of highly completive industries, obtaining strong publicity and a resilient public standing involves effort and determination.
So… here are 7 ways to generate publicity for your business!
1. Develop A Contact List
Creating a list of editors, newspapers, magazines and bloggers who you find align with your businesses image is key. Their information is easy to find and building a relationship with said connections can come in handy when you are looking to broaden your public reach. Don’t be shy to reach out to these people (they are looking to network too)!
2. Write and Send Press Releases
Press releases are imperative when it comes to generating publicity. They can be used on your company’s website and social media sites while also being used as an informative tool for contacts.
There are many business’ looking for publicity who use this strategy; MAKE SURE YOU STAND OUT! Develop a clear and strong headline to draw the reader into your information. Place all the necessary points in the beginning of your press release so that editors do not have to search for information. At the bottom of your release include a description and general details about your company in order to provide a fully developed image for the reader to consider. Sending out these press releases once a month to your contact list will ensure that your information is being seen by the right people!
3. Invite Press
Every business hosts an event at some point, why not invite the press? Inviting the media to have an up-close and personal experience with your business and what it has to offer can result in possible coverage at said medias platform. Even if the press figures you invite do not attend your event, at least they will have you in their system. Send a press release to the media you are inviting so that they are completely aware of the event and how their role can benefit both companies.
4. Use Social Media
In this age of technology, maintaining platforms on social media is imperative. Take advantage of this free publicity opportunity by creating a page on the platforms you feel your business is best geared towards. However, be conscious of what you are putting out onto the web and how it will relate to your target customer. Focusing your coverage is an easy way to ensure a substantial and appropriate social media presence that can appeal to your consumers without overwhelming them.
5. REACH OUT
Your business will not reach a decent public standing without work right? So, reach out! Reach out to contacts, bloggers, editors, old friends, anyone and everyone who might be interested in what your company has to offer. Put yourself on their radar and demonstrate a proper initiative; it will show your contact that you are interested in their platform and are serious about your work. Remember, the worst thing they can do is say no!
6. Get Involved
Increasing your presence in the community is a great way to put your companies name out there while building a positive reputation! Whether it’s working with a local charity or participating in a volunteer event, philanthropy is always beneficial! Also, mention to the charity you are working with that you would love to work with them in the future and would be interested in writing for them or appearing at a next event as a guest. Broadening your network and contact list is never a bad thing.
7. Maintain a Proper Image
There is such thing as bad press! Publicity will do no good (in fact, it will do the opposite) if your image and reputation is not respectable. Consumers want nothing to do with companies that are not appreciated in the public eye. Maintaining a proper image is key to ensuring that your business benefits from the publicity you have worked so hard to generate!

Goal setting isn’t always the easiest thing and I understand that it often times can be increasingly overwhelming. Having a concrete plan and list can prove to be a key tool to guide you to a dream career.
Reaching your end goal does not happen over time; it can be a long and at times frustrating process. In order to remain on track with a positive outlook, setting smaller goals will provide hope and a sure pathway to success.
We know that goal setting is hard… here are some tips & tricks to help!
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This acronym is a perfect guide for goal setting! Make sure that every goal you set meets these criteria in order for it to be the most beneficial. Each goal should be specific in what it is designed to accomplish while also maintain a format of measurement to note when it has been accomplished. Make your goal attainable – setting unrealistic goals only sets yourself up to be thrown off track with disappointment. Also, ensuring that your smaller milestone goals are relevant to and will benefit your end goal is imperative to goal setting. All of these goals must also be set to a specific time limit in order to ensure a set track of attainability for your end goal.
Write It Out
Writing and developing a concrete plan is a key way to maintain FOCUS. It is the perfect visual to see which goals you have ahead of you and how close you are on your journey to obtaining your ultimate goal. This plan is your personal guide to reaching your goals and obtaining your reams – MAKE IT PRETTY. Decorate your plan to your personality so that instead of viewing your goals as a chore, you see them as an exciting journey that will lead you to excellence.
Having a full and developed understanding as to what it will take to achieve your ultimate goal is essential. This may require a bit of research and a determination to learn everything you possibly can about what your end-goal entails and what it takes to get you there.
Have A Support System
Having a set support system can be your secret motivation weapon! Tell a mentor or group of people you trust what you are setting out to do. These people can be extremely helpful with providing advice and aiding with networking. Also, an outside parties honest feedback can be extremely helpful in ensuring that you are on track to meet your goals!
Obtaining goals and staying on track with your plan is a difficult task! Falling down is part of the journey, keep your head up and remain positive. Staying committed and true to yourself can be difficult through challenging tasks but once you achieve your goals it will feel INCREDIBLE! Stick to it and stay committed – you will surprise yourself with what you can do.
